NICAS Bouldering

We are excited to launch NICAS Bouldering - a nationally recognised bouldering aware scheme for young climbers - at The Arch this June (2025)!

Whether your child is completely new to climbing or looking to develop their skills in a structured and supportive way, NICAS Bouldering is the perfect place to start!

We can’t wait to welcome the next generation of climbers to the wall!

  • NICAS Bouldering (National Indoor Climbing Award Scheme – Bouldering) is a structured, progressive learning programme designed to introduce young people to indoor bouldering. Participants learn how to climb safely, improve technique, and work towards nationally recognised achievements.

Bouldering is a form of climbing done on low walls without ropes or harnesses – all falls are protected by thick safety mats. It’s fun, physically engaging, and encourages problem-solving, focus, and resilience.

NICAS Bouldering is open to children aged 7 and up and is split into two age groups:

    Ages 7–10

    Ages 11+

  • Climbing is more than just a physical activity – it builds confidence, independence, and persistence in young people. NICAS Bouldering provides a clear and motivating path for progression and offers:

    • A fun, social and inclusive environment

    • A strong focus on movement, safety and responsibility

    • Physical benefits like strength, balance and coordination

    • Mental benefits like problem-solving, goal-setting and self-esteem

    • Recognition and reward through the official NICAS logbook system

Each level of the scheme helps children build skills and confidence, while having a great time with others their age.

  • This beginner-level course introduces children to the exciting world of bouldering in a fun and supportive setting. It focuses on:

    • Learning basic climbing movements and techniques

    • Understanding how to warm up and cool down safely

    • Developing good balance and body control

    • Exploring climbing terminology and wall features

Whilst also understanding how to climb safely and respectfully with others

    Course details:

    Runs over 6 weeks

    90-minute sessions each week

Same group and instructor throughout the course

    Cost: £105 per child

Plus a one-off NICAS registration and logbook fee

Level 1 is designed to give children the best possible start in their climbing journey, laying the foundation for progression through the rest of the NICAS Bouldering levels.

What comes after Level 1?

Once a child completes Level 1, they can progress through four more exciting stages! Each level builds on the last, allowing young climbers to develop their confidence, knowledge, and ability.

Level 2 – Foundation Boulderer
Covers bouldering equipment, how to read routes, and how climbing grades work. Children continue to develop safe practices and build on their movement skills.

Level 3 – Competent Boulderer
Brings learners to the standard required by most bouldering gyms for unsupervised use. Teaches risk management, spotting, and advanced techniques.

Level 4 – Skilled Boulderer
Focuses on developing independence and goal setting. Participants become more self-motivated and work on refining their skills.

Level 5 – Performance Boulderer
The top level of the NICAS scheme. Children work on personal training plans, performance strategies, and may explore local and national competitions.

Each level includes both practical and theoretical elements, helping participants gain a deep understanding of bouldering as a sport and a discipline.
